1 June
Venue: Green Howards Museum
Time: 15:00

In June 1943 the 10th Battalion of the Green Howards became the 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Regiment.

A year later, they dropped into Normandy on D-Day and were given the job of taking and holding the village of Ranville, in support of the famous attack on Pegasus Bridge.

They also went on to fight during the last desperate German offensive in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

This Museum Talk explores both of these relatively unheralded actions, and confirms the adaptability, tenacity and fighting ability of the Yorkshiremen who came from the sky and who fought from Normandy to the Baltic.

Tickets: £5.

Note: this Museum Talk is an afternoon talk starting at 3pm. If you would like to look around the museum before the talk, please purchase admission on arrival.

The trials and triumphs of two families entwined in the fabric of wartime history are played out in this beautifully crafted original drama.

In a world where heroism often focuses on the battlefield, the action goes beyond the front lines, into the homes and hearts of those who waited and prayed. As well as following the lead character Ben Miller into battle, this story offers a profound appreciation for the unsung heroes - the mothers, wives and children.

Full of humour, tenderness and warmth, Remember is a poignant reminder of the universal threads of humanity that bind us together, and resonate long after the final curtain call.

In March 2022, acclaimed nature writer Roger Morgan-Grenville set out on a 1000-mile walk, from the Solent to Cape Wrath, to follow the spring as it progressed northwards at a speed of 20 miles per day – roughly the pace at which the oak leaves emerge. Concerned by species loss in the UK, he met the individuals who are helping to reverse it, from the allotments of Sheffield to the peat bogs of Kielder, from regenerative farming in the Cotswolds to the reintroduction of
beavers near Inverness. Battling Covid, blizzards and age, encountering the kindness of strangers,
Roger's epic eight-week adventure is both life-affirming and life-changing.

An exhibition of paintings in both oils and acrylics inspired by the local environment, by two artists with very different styles.

Jane and Rachel met whilst studying for an MA in Fine Art at Teesside University. They are both inspired by their local environment and landscapes but with very different styles and mediums. Whilst one artist is more abstract; using acrylics and neon colours with beautiful, free mark-making to bring a bright, unique perspective on the world around us. The other uses oils and is more illustrative; emphasising the colour, textures and patterns we see within a landscape. Both artists, however, could be described as contemporary and conceptual, creating bold, colourful and original paintings of landscapes we are familiar with but may now see with different eyes.

This specially curated exhibition takes place right after the summer solstice and across midsummer's day, featuring the artistic creations of up to nine talented artists who have captured the essence of this brief season. Traditionally, midsummer's day symbolised the midpoint of the growing season, marking the halfway point between planting and harvest. Some still hold the belief that good weather on this day predicts a bountiful harvest, while the gathering of flowers remains a significant aspect of modern midsummer traditions in many countries. In ancient times, pagans regarded midsummer as a magical time of new beginnings, celebrated through festivals and bonfires.
